API - American Petroleum Institute

Torque - Force required to turn valve or damper, stated in inch/pounds

Quarter turn - A device which rotates 90˚

Pneumatic - Air powered device

Electro-pneumatic - Air powered device controlled by an electrical signal, most commonly 4- 20 mA

Pneumatic Rotary Actuator - Air powered device which rotates valves or dampers

Electric Rotary Actuator - Electrically powered device which rotates valves or dampers

Double Acting Actuator - Power open/ Power close

Spring Return - Power open/ Spring close

Explosion Proof - Enclosure rating, of sufficient construction to contain explosion

Intrinsically Safe - Constructed of materials which prevent thermal or electrical ignition

Limit Switch - A device which contains mechanical or proximity switches for the purpose of sending a signal to a remote device. In terms of actuation, also known as a position indicator.

Positioner - In terms of actuation, a device which modulates (controls) travel of valves or dampers

Solenoid Valve - An electrically controlled valve to control the flow of air, gas, or fluids

Direct Mount - Ability to mount directly without a separate bracket and coupler

Modulating - Controlling position of valve or damper between fully open or fully closed

Bracket/Coupler - Means of connecting valve stem, or damper shaft to An actuator

Cv - Flow rate of clean water, through a valve, stated in GPM (gallons per minute) as measured at 1 psi.
